This highly
textured painting is part of my Synchronal Variety
series. These paintings combine decorative abstraction and meticulous
photorealism in a contemporary wabi-sabi aesthetic. Wabi-sabi
refers to the traditional Japanese aesthetic of appreciating
things that are impermanent, imperfect, and incomplete. This
ideal manifests itself in the abstract background of the piece,
which is comprised of many textural layers, overlaid with delicate
designs. A young lamb sits in the bright green grass in front
of a background of clovers. The yellow/orange strip at the top
is decorated with a pattern of blue and lavender flowers. The
pink decorative border separating the top layer from the middle
layer is created with soft pink paint textured with tiny glass
beads. The bottom maroon layer features a decorative abstract
design overlaying a rough sensual texture. The colors and subject
matter of this piece create a painting that is joyous and peaceful.
